Every day, I hear from residents who want the same things: safer roads, better traffic flow, and infrastructure that supports the growth we’re experiencing across Charles County. These aren’t abstract concerns — they’re real, daily challenges for families, commuters, and local businesses.
That’s why this year’s Transportation Priority Letter focuses on targeted, high‑impact improvements that reflect what we’re hearing on the ground in District 1.
2026 District 1 Transportation Priorities

These projects were selected because they address the issues residents raise most often — safety, congestion, and reliability:
• Hughesville – Maryland Route 231 corridor improvements
• Hawthorne Road / Stagecoach Road at U.S. Route 301
• Glen Albin Road at U.S. Route 301 improvements
• Kings Grant / Maryland Route 488 safety improvements
• Rosewick Road at U.S. Route 301 improvements
• Wheatley Road at Maryland Route 6
• Trinity Church Road at Maryland Route 6 roundabouts
• Route 6 improvements in La Plata
These aren’t long‑shot proposals or wish‑list ideas. They are real, targeted safety upgrades designed to protect families, reduce congestion, and strengthen the infrastructure that keeps our community moving.
A Clearer Picture: District 1 Priority Map

This map shows exactly where each project sits within District 1 — from the Route 231 corridor in Hughesville to the safety improvements along Route 6 and the U.S. 301 corridor. These are the roads our residents use every day, and they deserve attention, investment, and follow‑through.
Connecting Local Priorities to Regional Progress
Our work in District 1 doesn’t stop at county lines. Strong local infrastructure depends on strong regional connections — and one of the most significant improvements in our region is the Nice–Middleton Bridge, which opened to traffic in October 2022.
I recently visited the project site to see the progress firsthand and speak with partners about what this upgrade means for Charles County. The new bridge has already:
- Improved safety along the U.S. 301 corridor
- Reduced bottlenecks for daily commuters
- Strengthened the connection between Charles County and King George County
- Supported economic activity and emergency response routes
By aligning our District 1 priorities with major regional investments like the Nice–Middleton Bridge, we’re ensuring that residents benefit from a transportation network that is safer, more reliable, and built for long‑term growth.

Moving Forward Together

Infrastructure isn’t just about roads — it’s about safety, opportunity, and quality of life. These projects reflect the concerns you’ve shared with me and the commitment I’ve made to deliver results for District 1.
These projects move forward because of strong partnerships — with longtime community leaders, regional advocates, and the institutions that keep Charles County safe and thriving.
I’ll continue working with state partners, local agencies, and our community to keep these priorities moving forward.
Your voice shapes this work — and together, we’re building a stronger, safer Charles County.
